MORE KNOWLEDGE. MORE FREEDOM. LESS FEAR.

In 1994, an Atlanta based Service Dog School, Canine Assistants, started placing Seizure Response Dogs with people who have epilepsy. These dogs were taught to perform tasks, such as going for help in the event of a seizure. Despite the fact that the dogs were not taught to do so, most of them appeared to anticipate seizure onset up to forty minutes in advance.

For years, the team behind Know Biological worked with Canine Assistants and leading researchers in the field of Scent Detection to validate the hypothesis that something was being emitted from the body before a seizure that dogs could smell but that humans could not.

TODAY, KNOW BIOLOGICAL IS TAKING A GIANT LEAP FORWARD FOR A MISSION THAT BEGAN MUCH EARLIER.

THESE ASSUMPTIONS WERE CORRECT.

After six years of research, science has confirmed a bouquet of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) found only in patients just before, during, and just after a seizure. These VOCs being released from the body created a smell that dogs could alert to.

It was clear that knowing a seizure was oncoming would be life changing. However, most of the 65 million people who have epilepsy worldwide do not have access to a medical alert dog. The proprietary information discovered through our research would need to be used to develop a device that could provide early warning of pending seizures.

In 2019, Know Biological was established to create a monitor that alerts to oncoming seizures. After developing the platform for epilepsy, Know has now begun development of a similar device for alerting to other predictable medical conditions.
